In cooperation with Vataha, the ABBA student association is organizing a series of panel discussions at Leiden University.
The first discussion is titled “The Future of Ukraine.”
The event brings together a diverse range of experts to analyze and contemplate the trajectory of Ukraine in the 21st century. With a particular focus on Russia’s war in Ukraine, the panel aims to provide nuanced perspectives on the challenges and possibilities shaping Ukraine’s future.

Julia Soldatiuk-Westerveld (Research Fellow and Ukraine expert from Clingendael Institute)
Andriy Siromakha (Ukrainian war veteran and founder of Siromakha Foundation)
Thijs Reuten (Member of the European Parliament and Dutch Labor politician)
Antoaneta Dimitrova (Professor of Comparative Governance at the Institute for Security and Global Affairs Leiden University)
Kido Koenig (Director of Foundation Max van der Stoel)
Alfred Soons (Emeritus Professor of Public International Law at Utrecht University)

The event will be moderated by Kido Koenig, Director of Foundation Max van der Stoel.
Additionally, Leiden University Professor Antoaneta Dimitrova will make an opening statement, providing academic context to the ongoing situation and framing the discussions that will unfold during the event.
The event is scheduled to take place on Thursday, February 15, 17:30, at Leiden University Campus Wijnhaven.
The 2nd discussion is titled “The Impact of War and Conflict on the Environment.”
The panel aims to build a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between warfare and its lasting effect on the environment. Experts will address issues such as military pollution and the destruction of ecosystems, as well as the new topic of decarbonizing the military-industrial complex.
Our line-up of speakers includes:
Professor Dario Fazzi from Leiden University (exploring the environmental impact of the military-industrial complex)
Emil Havstrup from Clingendael Institute (discussing the decarbonization of the military)
Saachi Ramrattansing from Youth for Climate NL (focusing on youth engagement)
Rostyslav Bun from Lviv Polytechnic National University (presenting on military emissions, online)
and an expert from PAX (addressing the impact of war on Ukraine).
The discussion will be moderated by Marijn Markus, a Ukrainian intelligence expert and data scientist from Capgemini.
